New Restaurant To Open at Watch Factory in Waltham

A new Italian restaurant is planned for the Watch Factory in Waltham in a space that sits along the scenic Charles River.  The new eatery will serve Italian cuisine that will also feature a cafe with pastries and gelato.  Both sit down and take out service will be offered.  The restaurant will contain approximately 80 seats, 30 of which will be on the already built outside deck that is feet away from the Charles River.  The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The recently renovated Watch Factory contains hundreds of loft style residences and over 150,000 square feet of office space.  Original project plans contained two spaces for a full service restaurant and a separate smaller sandwich/cafe, both located on the North end of the building closest to Prospect Street.  While both office and residential tenants have occupied the Watch Factory for a number of years, the restaurant space has remained vacant.  Permits are in the process of being granted for the interior build out.  No opening date is known at this time.

1265 Main Street Waltham Development Nears Fall 2014 Openings

The long awaited and much anticipated 1265 Main Street retail and office development project in Waltham is nearing the openings of its first retail stores in the Fall of 2014.  The first announced store opening is Marshall's, a discount clothing retailer, part of TJX Companies, which is headquartered in nearby Framingham, MA.  The grand opening is scheduled to be held on October 9, 2014 at 8 am.  TJX Companies has an existing outlet in Waltham under the TJ Maxx brand on Lexington Street, that will not be affected by the Marshall's opening.

Jake n Joe's Sports Grille (pictured above), will soon be adding its third location at the 1265 Main retail complex.  The sports bar and restaurant is owned by the Nocera family, owners of the regional Chateau restaurant chain that was founded and based in Waltham.  Jake n Joe's has two existing locations in Norwood and Foxboro Massachusetts.  No opening date has been announced but is expected in the Fall of 2014, in time to catch some of the 2014 NFL football season.

The third and final opening set for this fall is a Starbucks coffee shop that will feature a drive-thru.  This will be the first Waltham location to open for the 23,000+ coffee shop chain.  A second Waltham location is also currently under construction at 1019 Lexington Street.

Approximately 5,000 square feet of retail space attached to the Market Basket building (pictured below) is ready for interior tenant build outs, however no specific tenants have been named.  Original site plans call for additional buildings to be constructed as part of the first phase of the development project.  While the above named shops and restaurants open, the expansive site will remain in part a construction zone as further land clearing occurs, new buildings are erected, and the planned 120,000 square foot office building is rehabilitated.

Construction started for 256 2nd Ave Office Building

Construction has recently started for a two-story office building at 256 2nd Avenue in Waltham.  The nearly 26,000 square foot building located on the 128 belt can be seen from the busy highway.  With construction commencing without any named tenants, this is more proof of the hot Waltham office market that is attracting new tenants into the city.  In addition to convenient highway access to Waltham office parks, shops and restaurants will begin opening at the end of 2014 and throughout 2015 at the 1265 Main (Polaroid site) development and later in 2016 at 10 CityPoint Place (corner of Totten Pond Rd and Third Ave).

New TD Bank To Be Built in Waltham

TD Bank has filed plans to build new bank at corner of Main and Exchange streets.
TD Bank, part of Toronto-Dominion Bank based in Toronto, Canada, is progressing with plans to build a new full service bank branch in Waltham.  The location at the corner of Main Street and Exchange Street would require the demolition of two existing buildings at 749 and 751 Main Streets, which are currently occupied by a two-story residential building and a one-story multi-tenant office building, respectively.  The proposed location will have a two lane drive-thru, which is currently pending a special permit from the city.  Site access will be achieved from two driveways, one from a new curb cut on Main Street at the west end of the property and another on Exchange Street.

The bank had previously obtained a special permit for a two-lane drive thru for a  location planned at the 1265 Main Street retail development, which is approximately one mile to the west of the 749-751 Main Street address.  Construction has not yet commenced for a bank building at the 1265 Main St property.  It is unclear if the company will build both site locations.  An existing TD Bank at Bear Hill Road in Waltham would be closed upon the opening of either Main Street location.

Jimmy John's Sandwich Chain Plans Waltham Location

Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches, an Illinois based chain of more than 1,900 locations, is pursuing a new shop in Waltham.  A company source confirmed a location is planned for 475 Winter Street in Waltham, part of the retail plaza anchored by Bertucci's Italian Restaurant.  At least one other Massachusetts location is in the works for South Boston, which would be the first for the chain in Massachusetts.  The company has engaged a local attorney for the Waltham permitting process.

Boloco, a regional burrito chain headquartered in Boston, had hopes for a shop of its own at this location and presented itself before the City Council in 2012.  There were strong concerns from the Council primarily over parking at the site to accommodate a quick service restaurant.  Although the Council did not formally approve or reject the request for a Special Permit, Boloco ultimately decided to withdraw its plans to open in Waltham.  Given the similar business profile to Jimmy John's, it is unclear at this time if the issues that arose from the Boloco proposal have since been remedied.  Stay tuned for updates.

Leo's Place Move to Waltham Location Progressing

Leo's Place is moving along in preparation for its Main St Waltham opening.  A recent visit to the site showed interior walls have been refinished and painted, new lighting has been installed, and new dining room furniture is now in place.  The kitchen area is awaiting shipment of a grill and other equipment.  As seen in the picture above, the configuration of the bar and dining area is being kept consistent with the layout of the former In a Pickle restaurant, the former occupant of this 655 Main St location.  No opening date has been announced, however appears to be on target for an August or September opening.

Local Biotech Firm Relocating and Expanding to Waltham

FORUM Pharmaceuticals will be moving and expanding its current Watertown operations to a 122,000 square foot building at 225 Second Avenue in Waltham.  The building, formerly occupied by ADP Payroll Services, was purchased by Marcus Partners in December 2012, who subsequently sold the property in March 2014.  The building is being renovated for office and lab use.  The project will also renovate the lobby, exterior facade, among other interior and exterior upgrades.

The privately held drug company, formerly known as EnVivo Pharmaceuticals, has a drug in late-stage development to treat Alzheimer's disease.  A 1,600 patient phase 3 clinical trial program was announced by the company in January 2014.

Demolition underway at Totten Pond Road project

Demolition has commenced over the last week at the Totten Pond Road office park development project.  The middle of the three buildings has been completely demolished, with the remaining two (pictured above and below) expected to be leveled in the coming week to prepare the site for new building construction.  Two new buildings, each five stories and approximately 200,000 square feet, will occupy the site, with the potential for ground level restaurant space.

Courtyard Marriott Waltham Expansion

The Courtyard Marriott Waltham is progressing on a 51 room addition to the existing building located at 387 Winter Street.  The hotel's owner, also owns and operates the adjacent Holiday Inn Express.  To make room for the Courtyard expansion, two 2-story Holiday Inn Express buildings were demolished in early 2014, leaving a 5-story Holiday Inn Express building at the site.
